Drones

Drones have been an integral part of our toolkit for the past 10 years. We've used them on every project as a key component of our site surveys. For renovations, they make accessing hard-to-reach areas quick and easy. For new builds, drones help us understand site-specific views from different floors, allowing us to tailor our designs more precisely to the environment. Additionally, we utilize photogrammetry to capture detailed 3D models of important site features. Of course, capturing engaging social media content is another frequent and valuable use.

We recommend the DJI Mini 4 Pro or the DJI Mini 3 Pro based on our extensive experience. Initially, we started with a budget drone, but it only lasted a few months. We then upgraded to the DJI Phantom 4, which served us reliably for seven years, flying at least once or twice a week. The only issue we encountered was a battery failure after years of use. Anticipating that the Phantom might eventually reach the end of its lifespan, we purchased the DJI Mini 3 Pro. The technology in these mini drones is remarkable, making them incredibly easy to fly. Some of our staff, who found the larger Phantom intimidating, had no trouble operating the Mini 3. It also comes with a controller featuring a built-in screen, which streamlines setup to just a few minutes.

Another significant advantage of the DJI Mini series is its weight—under 250g—which means there are fewer restrictions on where you can fly it in the UK. You don't need a special license; just register the drone and display the registration number on it.

Here are some important rules you need to know. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in the UK is strict about compliance, and fines can be hefty for rule violations.

  1. Register your drone and display the registration number on it. CAA Register
  2. Do not fly above 400ft/120m, as this is where aircraft operate.
  3. Always maintain line of sight with your drone. The Mini is small and can be difficult to see beyond 330ft/100m.
  4. Avoid flying over people and keep a minimum distance of 50m from crowds.
  5. Stay out of flight zones. Check the flight zone map. If necessary, you can contact the local control tower for permission, though we haven't had to do this in the UK.
  6. Obtain landowner permission first. We typically use a standard form for clients to sign, or we confirm their consent via email.
  7. Make sure you have the right insurance for your drone.
  8. Be responsible and avoid reckless flying. Many people may feel uneasy when they see a drone flying nearby, so it's essential to know and follow the rules before you take off.

Photogrammetry

Drones work really well with Photogrammetry but what is it and why should you care?
Photogrammetry is the science and technology of obtaining accurate measurements and 3D data from photographs. By capturing multiple overlapping images of an object, structure, or landscape from different angles, photogrammetry software can reconstruct the subject in three dimensions. This technique is widely used in fields like architecture, engineering, construction, and archaeology to create detailed 3D models, maps, and measurements of physical spaces.

In the context of drones, photogrammetry involves flying a drone equipped with a camera over a site, taking a series of images from various perspectives. These images are then processed with specialized software to create a 3D model or map of the area. This is particularly useful for site surveys, as it allows for accurate, up-to-date representations of the terrain and structures, which can be used for planning, design, and analysis.
